Glossary: Key Terms & Metrics

Dec 4, 2024

Welcome to the Yolando Glossary. To get the most out of your AEO strategy, it's important to understand the key terms and metrics we use to measure your brand's performance in the world of AI.

Core Concepts

These are the fundamental building blocks of the Yolando platform.

Term

Definition

AI Platform

The AI assistant where users ask questions (e.g., ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini). Yolando tracks your brand's performance across these platforms, as some may favor different brands or sources.

Prompt

A specific question that runs through an AI platform to simulate a user query. All prompts will be run daily through each AI platform.

The prompts you select are foundational; they determine all the discoverability data and insights Yolando gathers for you.

Topic

A category used to group related prompts thematically (e.g., Features, Integrations, Use Cases).

Topics allow you to organize your insights and measure performance by strategic business area.

Branded vs. Unbranded Prompts

Yolando uses two types of prompts:

  • Unbranded Prompts: Do not mention a brand (e.g., "best running shoes for marathon training").

  • Branded Prompts: Directly mention a brand name (e.g., "are Nike running shoes good?" or "Nike Pegasus vs. Brooks Ghost").

If a brand is mentioned in a prompt, the response will not affect that brand's Discoverability, Share of Voice, or Citation scores; it will only influence its Reputation score.

Prompt Execution

A single run of one prompt on a specific AI platform. Think of it as one "test" that produces one AI response for analysis. Yolando runs these daily.

AI Response

The text, citations, and other data generated by an AI platform from a single prompt execution. This is the raw content that Yolando analyzes, generates insights and calculates performance metrics across each feature.

Mention

Any instance where a brand name is detected in an AI response. Mentions are the building blocks for measuring discoverability, share of voice, and reputation.

Tracked vs. Untracked Brand

  • Tracked Brand: A brand you have explicitly chosen to monitor (your brand and your key competitors). All core metrics are benchmarked against this group.

  • Untracked Brand: Any other brand that appears in an AI response. This is useful for discovering new competitors.

RAG

"Retrieval-Augmented Generation".

This is Yolando’s custom knowledge base for your brand. It combines public data about your company and competitors with custom resources you upload to enrich it with proprietary insights and brand-specific data. This context powers strategic insights, recommendations, and content generation.

Funnel Stages

The classification of a prompt based on its position in the customer journey:

  • TOFU (Top of Funnel): Broad awareness queries for category discovery.

    • They use general terms like 'best,' 'top,' or 'how to.'

    • e.g., best running shoes for beginners or what is procure-to-pay automation?

  • MOFU (Middle of Funnel): Evaluation queries comparing specific features, integrations, or use cases.

    • e.g., running shoes with wide toe boxes or what is the best procedure-to-pay automation for enterprises

  • BOFU (Bottom of Funnel): High-intent decision queries about pricing, cost, or implementation.

    • e.g., best affordable running shoes under $150 or what is the cost of procure-to-pay automation?

Key Metrics & Formulas

These are the core metrics you will use to track your AEO performance and benchmark against competitors.

Why It Matters

Formula

Discoverability

The percentage of AI responses that mention your brand. It measures how often you appear in the conversation.

This excludes branded prompts that directly mentioned your brand's name.

If your discoverability is low, you are effectively invisible to potential customers in AI responses.

(AI Responses Mentioning Your Brand / Total AI Responses) × 100

Share of Voice (SoV)

The percentage of total brand mentions that belong to your brand compared to your tracked competitors. It measures how dominant you are in the conversation.

A low share of voice means competitors are being talked about more frequently in AI resposnes, winning attention and consideration over you.

(Your Total Mentions / Total Mentions of All Tracked Brands) × 100

Reputation Score

The percentage of your brand mentions that are framed positively in AI responses. It measures the quality and tone of your visibility.

Negative or neutral sentiment can harm brand reputation and reduce a user's likelihood to consider your product.

(Positive Mentions / (Positive + Negative Mentions)) × 100

Citation Share

The percentage of all web source citations in AI responses that link back to your brand's domain.

High citation share means AI models view your content as authoritative. By getting cited, you directly shape the AI's narrative.

(Citations to Your Domain / Total Citations to All Domains) × 100

Position

The average placement of your brand's first mention across all AI responses where you appear. (Note: A lower number is better.)

For example, a score of 1 means your brand is the first one mentioned in the AI’s response, representing top-tier visibility and strongest prominence.

A lower average position demonstrates higher prominence and a stronger recommendation from the AI. It shows you're not just mentioned, but mentioned first.

(Sum of all mention positions) ÷ (Total number of mentions)
